Marianne Faithfull was born in Hampstead, London, on December 29, 1946. Her father, Major Robert Glynn Faithfull, was a British Army officer, and her mother, Eva von Sacher-Masoch, was an Austrian baroness. Faithfull’s parents were both from wealthy families, but they separated when she was a young child. She was raised primarily by her mother and grandparents. Faithfull attended various boarding schools in England, including St. Joseph’s Convent School in Reading and St. Mary’s School in Wantage. However, she was expelled from several of these schools due to her rebellious behavior. Faithfull became interested in the bohemian lifestyle of the London music and art scenes as a teenager. She was friends with several famous musicians, including The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, and was a part of the Swinging Sixties movement. Faithfull became a model and actress and started singing in local coffeehouses and clubs. Faithfull was surrounded by artists, writers, and musicians growing up, as her parents were part of the bohemian set in London. She formed close relationships with artists such as John Dunbar and Henri Cartier-Bresson and was introduced to the works of poets such as Dylan Thomas and W.H. Auden. In 1964, at the age of 17, Faithfull released her first single, “As Tears Go By,” which was written for her by Jagger, Keith Richards, and Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham. The song became a hit and established Faithfull as a singer. Over the next several years, she released several more singles and albums, including her 1967 album, “Marianne Faithfull.” Despite her early success, Faithfull’s personal life became tumultuous in the late 1960s and 1970s. She struggled with drug addiction and was arrested several times. However, she managed to turn her life around in the 1980s and 1990s and made a successful comeback with the release of her album “Broken English” in 1979. Since then, Faithfull has continued to perform and release music and has become a respected figure in the music industry. She has collaborated with several musicians, including Nick Cave and Roger Waters, and has been recognized for her contributions to music with numerous awards and honors.
