Merkel died on January 2, 1986, in New York City from cancer. She was 82 years old at the time of her death. She was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 in recognition of her contributions to the entertainment industry.
